Around LAX, every toll is one you can skip

Los Angeles has no toll you must pay. There are optional express lanes beside the freeways, and the Orange County toll roads (SR 73, 133, 241 and 261) that the fastest route to Laguna or San Diego uses. Pick a drive to see the toll and the free route's extra minutes.

None of these drives forces a toll. The ones that touch a toll road have a free route a few minutes longer, and express lanes are optional extra lanes you can stay out of.

Who charges the tolls around LAX

The Toll Roads (SR 73, 133, 241, 261)

Full toll roads in Orange County, not lanes beside a free road. The fastest route from LAX to Laguna Beach or San Diego uses SR 73, the San Joaquin Hills toll road. FasTrak accounts from any California toll operator work on them.

Without a pass: Pay online without an account within 5 days before or after driving, using only the license plate number.

In a rental car: Register the rental's plate to have tolls charged to your card for the rental period; that covers only these four toll roads. Driving without doing so may bring tolls and service fees through the rental company, or a violation.

Metro ExpressLanes (I-110 and I-10)

Toll lanes beside the free lanes on the I-110 Harbor Freeway and the I-10 San Bernardino Freeway, run by LA Metro. They need a FasTrak Flex transponder.

Without a pass: Driving in them without a FasTrak Flex transponder or registered account brings a Pay as You Go Notice of Toll Evasion Violation to the registered owner.

In a rental car: If you have a FasTrak account, add the rental's plate with an end date and mount your transponder in the car. Otherwise stay in the free lanes.

405 Express Lanes (Orange County)

Express lanes beside the free lanes on I-405 in Orange County, run by OCTA. The free lanes stay open.

Without a pass: You need a FasTrak account to use them.

In a rental car: Rental and temporary vehicles are the only vehicles that can use the 405 Express Lanes without a transponder, once added to your account with start and end dates.

Before you take the counter's toll plan

From LAX you can skip every toll and lose only a few minutes. If you do drive SR 73, you can pay that toll online yourself within 5 days with just the plate number, so a counter toll plan is not needed for it. Express lanes need a FasTrak account. Each rental company's plan and fee is in its rental agreement; read that before you accept a plan at the counter.

Fastest car route out and back from the public Valhalla router run by FOSSGIS (OpenStreetMap data, no live traffic), once allowing tolls and once excluding every tolled road. Toll flags come from OpenStreetMap toll tags, which are set per direction, so a bridge tolled one way only shows in that direction. Every toll verdict on this page was then checked by hand against the toll operator sources listed. Destinations geocoded with Nominatim. Drive times are free-flow estimates; real times are longer with traffic and stops.
